You know how lately I have been droning on about finding my
passion? Well, while I have been whining, my husband has been out finding his
passion! He has been fairly unhappy with his work-life since leaving the
restaurant business (at my nagging insistence) about 2 years ago. He went on to
sell heavy-equipment and then on to sell ad space, neither was a good fit. He
was unhappy, bored and completely unfulfilled. While out on the road (he
traveled constantly) he had been searching for something that made him happy,
while at the same time made money and had a decent work schedule. Then, my
WORST NIGHTMARE- he was putting his resume in for restaurant management jobs.
NO NO NO NO. Restaurants are not conducive to a proper family life: long hours,
late hours, babysitting dumbasses that come in hung over and still stink of stale
cigarettes and miller lite from the night before. I wanted no part of that
world. We (I mean me) had worked so hard to get Jeff to leave the restaurant
business, but alas, she is a cruel mistress…
Jeff has a passion for the business. He is a certified Sommelier,
a fancy term for a super knowledgeable wine guy with a degree in grapes. No,
seriously, it a crazy rigorous program followed by an even more rigorous test
to prove you are a fancy pants. He has a
passion for the directing of a restaurant, the business of the restaurant, the
WINE of the restaurant…so he went on a search. Several resumes later he was in
talks with a prominent Dallas restaurateur opening a new craft coffee/wine bar.
Weird concept, but it had decent hours and a healthy wine program. I was not so
thrilled. They ended up going with someone cheaper and Jeff saw a job
possibility slip through his hands. He was sad. I hesitate to say devastated,
but just totally disappointed that there was a GM position with a wine program
that would save him from his current job situation. I could see how much he
yearned for something that lit his fire, something that made him tick, and
something that made him happy and excited to go to work.
I told him the old adage; everything happens for a reason…I
really do believe that. Sure enough, he gets another email from a restaurant
and wine bar. Alright, perfect. Let’s do this, babe! Long story short, after 3
interviews he was told to quit his job and be in Houston the following Friday
to meet the owners of the company. WAHOOOO!! My husband is now the Wine Manager
for a well-known wine dive in Dallas. The hours can be wonky, but he will
always be home at night and hopefully feel fulfilled during the day. He knew
his passion, followed his desires and MADE IT HAPPEN! I am so very impressed
with his focus, tenacity and drive to find his career. While I have been
blah-blah-blahing over here, he has been out there turning his dreams into
reality. Damn. Well, done sir. You continue to surprise and impress me.
Get this, their slogan: Champagne and Fried Chicken? Why the
hell not?
That makes me laugh. I love curse words.
xoxo
